Encounter Place Vendôme is from the exhibition An American in Paris produced exclusively for Black Flag Art. In the spirit of Richard Avedon’s penetrating eye, this series of AI photographs captures modern-day Paris through its visitors, the pilgrims, the seekers of something they’ve seen a thousand times before arriving. Avedon stripped away context to reveal essence. Here, Paris becomes both monument and mirror. These images ask: What happens when Avedon’s ruthless elegance meets the beautiful chaos of people trying to have the experience they came for? An American in Paris explores the collision between expectation and reality, between the mythic city and the lived one; pilgrimage and disappointment, wonder and weariness, the strange democracy of being a stranger in the most photographed city on earth.
